Probably just the fact that it's been a week since we've last updated pretty much sums up what this last week has been like. While it's been completely wonderful to finally have Mathew home safe and sound, it's of course been a huge adjustment and very tiring. Many a times I've had good intentions of updating the blog or uploading pictures, but then the weariness kicks in and I feel too tired to put complete thoughts together.
I'm sure we're no different than any other new parents. You try to be prepared as you can possibly be for a new baby, but nothing completely prepares you for just how tired you'll become. Being at RMH and visiting the NICU was very exhausting, but more so in an emotional way. At the end of the night I could still go back to the room, take a hot shower, and sleep. Now I feel pretty accomplished to squeeze in a shower at all...haha!
Mathew is really thriving and we're so thankful that this first week hasn't brought about any health concerns at all. We're trying to figure out the whole routine of eating and finding a good balance. He's a great eater and definitely lets you know when he's hungry. Right now he's eating about every 3 hours. The day time seems to go pretty smoothly....eat, a little alert time, then back to sleep. Night has been a little more rough. He seems to wake up hungry and eager to eat about 2-3 times during the night, but then he gets very sleepy while eating and it's a challenge to get him to wake up in order to get a full feeding in. Then, once he is finally alert, it's hard to get him to go back down for the night and the fussiness begins. It's only been a week, so I'm hopeful that we'll continue to make progress!
We had his first pediatrician appointment today. The little chunky monkey gained a pound since being discharged from the NICU last week. He's now 9 lbs. 11 oz. He also grew a little over an inch since birth. He wasn't particularly fond of being handled by the pediatrician. He put on quite the fussy show for her, but overall he was a champ! He did great in the car and the waiting room. No shots at this first appointment. He already had what he needed at the NICU. We don't have to back until his 2 month appointment. In the meantime though we'll be following up with another echo cardiogram and an appointment with the pediatric cardiologist later this month.
Both Mat's parents and my parents were here for Mathew's homecoming. We're so thankful for all their help. I really don't know how we could've gotten through this time without the help of our families and friends. Between both sets of parents we were well fed and cared for and Mathew got LOTS of lovin' from all the grandparents. His parents had to head home over the weekend and mine just left yesterday, so we are officially on our own now. Even though it's a little scary and my house looks a little messier, it's also nice to begin settling in to being a new family of 3 and adjusting to all that entails.
We've taken lots of great pics over the last week and I still have many from the NICU that need uploading. Hopefully I'll get to that soon. I can't promise I'll be updating as often as I once did, but I hope to get back to being more regular with it very soon. :) We continue to be so thankful to everyone for the prayers, words of encouragement, wonderful meals, and all the love sent our way. Look forward to sharing more soon!

Keli and Mat, DEARS!
As I am sure your parents told you, all that stuff is absolutely NORMAL! Especially the parts about squeezing in the daily shower thing! How well I remember with both Stephanie and Tommy. And they grew up just fine and so will MJ. If at all possible, relax and let it all happen. MJ WILL get with the program at some point in time and all things will start making their own kind of sense in your lives together. As you have heard before, take naps when MJ does; let the housework go and Keli, you take care of yourself, too! It will all come together sooner than you can believe it. We are THRILLED to hear of all the progress and health happening with MJ. God's blessings are definitely showering down on you all.
Love you,
Dee Mullen
Yep that sounds right. I think that when you have a baby it is natural to eventually given in and realize that your house will never be as clean as you want it and a 5 minute shower is like a vacation. Life as you know it is forever changed and you can't imagine it any other way. Try and rest when the baby does and don't worry about cleaning. They get big quickly and one day he will sleep through the night and you will be able to do those things again. We have been thinking about your family and are happy to hear great news. Love you!

Hi Mat and Keli,
We are so happy that you have little MJ home. Skylar asks everyday how he is doing! Keli, I can attest to the fact that you are absolutely right about not knowing how tired you actually become until you have your own baby. There were days when I would be in my pj's until 6 p.m. and I learned to shower in 1 minute flat. Skylar had her days and nights picked up so needless to say for 2 months I was a walking zombie. MJ sounds alot like Skylar in what our peditrician referred to as a "snacker"...they eat just enough to fall back asleep but not get full so every hour or two you are feeding them again. I can tell you it does get a whole lot better. In the beginning though it is tough. Hang in there. Maybe we will be able to make a road trip after school is out to see you all. Take care--Love Melissa
I didn't think your house looked bad at all...did you clean for us? KW
