The Journey Begins
Today was our much anticipated "Final IVF Consultation." The anticipation has been killing me, so I was really looking forward to receiving more detailed explanations and learning our next step. Our visit started with an initial ultrasound. All my "innards" looked good! :) Then, he did a "mock embryo transfer" just so I could feel what that part of the process would feel like, and it seems like that part will be relatively painless! After that we spent a good hour or so with the IVF nurse. She explained all the medications and taught us how to do all the injections. It was all so overwhelming really. It's amazing how they have each tiny step down to a science. Each day is mapped out for you as far as what to do when. I won't bother posting it all here, because if it overwhelmed me, it will probably make no sense to most people. I'll update as we go though. Basically, the ball starts rolling on Monday. We begin Lupron injections at that time. I'll get those every morning between 6 and 8 AM in my abdomen or thigh. The role of the Lupron is to regulate the secreation of two hormones known as FSH and LH from the pituitary gland. The result of the secretion of these 2 hormones is the development of a follicle in the ovary. It just so happens that the starting date of these injections is May 26th, our wedding anniversary. That seems like a great sign to me! How cool to begin this amazing process on such a special day. Plus, I'm sure Mat will think this is the best anniversary present ever--jabbing me with a needle! :) All the medications are a little intimidating, but I know it's all an important part of the process. I've spent a fair amount of time on the phone with the mail order pharmacy today just trying to finalize our order. The cost of all these drugs is a little sickening! But all in all, it was a good day. Everyone at our doctor's office is so kind and sweet with us. I'm sure they are used to dealing with hormonal women with lots of questions, but their sincerity really makes such a difference in the whole process and I am so thankful for them! Mat and I went to lunch in Celebration after our appointment and then to Downtown Disney to see a movie. Mat was sweet and thought of that one and it was a nice way to unwind and take my mind of everything for a bit! I'm thankful today went smoothly and anxiously awaiting the next step! The doctor reminded us that it is important to realize what the "big picture" is but to just focus on one step at a time. It's really too much to take in all at once, so focusing on one step at a time seems like a great idea to me! Now I just need to get my mind on board with that so I can relax. :)
