From Matt:
Well first and foremost, YIPPEEEE!!! I think everyone knows that I was intensely longing for a boy. I felt some guilt for not having the "I just want a healthy baby" attitude, but now that we know it is a boy I can just enjoy!!
So, now for the next big drama. My wife is so wonderful and agreed many years ago to let me name my first born son Mathew Alan Keyes Jr. That being said both of us agree that we do not want to call him Little Matt, Matt, or Baby Matt. So that leaves us looking for a nickname that he will actually go by. I have added a poll so please vote. Write in's are welcome but here is synopsis of the current choices:
MJ-Stands for Matt Jr. Pros-reminds me off Michael Jordan and Michael Johnson (A famous track and field star) Cons-Keli thinks of a radio show host here in Tampa and some dude from Real World.
Alan- Obvious where this comes from. Last night I asked my Grandma if this had any family significance as it is my dads, mine, and brothers middle name. She said no, she just liked it! Pros-easy to explain and Keli likes it Cons-I am luke warm on this one.
AJ- Comes from Alan Jr. Pros-Keli likes this one too. Cons-I am not a huge fan, and difficult to explain where is comes from.
Jay- This is a dark horse candidate. Basically it just stands for Junior, but just J seems weird so we made it Jay. We both like this name and the letter J has a lot of significance in our lives. Keli's mom and grandma have J as a middle initial and her brother is a Jeff. On my side I have a grandparents Jim and Josie, sister Jessica and nearly all my closest friends are J names. My best buddy John, my oldest friend Jason, closest girlfriend Jill and other dear friends Jeff and Jason. Pros-we both like it and some sentimental value. Cons-somewhat unorthodox.
Mathieson- Another kind of off the wall option. Obviously is similar to Mathew and that is where the appeal started. The funny story behind this goes like this. Our dogs both have Key West related names. As you all know Key West is near and dear to our hearts. Well Mathieson's was our favorite Ice Cream shoppe in Key West. For those of you who came to visit us it is the place that had the half pound chocolate chip cookies!!! YUMMMMY!!! Pros-sentimental value, we both like it, original. Cons- do we want the same theme we used with the dogs???, afraid people will shorten it to Matt.
Mathew- everyone knows I go by Matt (or Mat as Keli likes to spell it) so the thought is we could call our son Mathew. Pros-obvious reasoning, both like the name, means gift from God (no I am not making that up) Cons-hard not to keep people from calling him Matt.
So, those are the nicknames we are most considering. Your vote would be greatly appreciated and again, write ins(via comments) are welcome. Hope everyone is doing well!!!
Matt

I voted AJ because one of my favorite all time TV shows was Simon & Simon. I had one other thought... His initials will be MAK... what about calling him Mack? In the end what ever you decide will stick... My name is James but they decided to call me Jamie... who knew the Bionic Woman would be Jamie Summers and I would be accused in grade school of having a girls name. Congratulations on having such a fun decision to make!
Oooh...whoever knew how much fun this was going to be! Here are my thoughts:
MJ - doesn't roll off the tongue.
Alan - reminds me of the geeky character from 2 & 1/2 men.
AJ - very cute & rolls off the tongue better than MJ.
Jay - I once knew a very boring guy named Jay, but maybe baby keyes can change my view of the name!
Mathieson - long nicknames don't stick, someone will shorten it.
Mathew - same as above, hence why Mat is Mat! :-)
Can I call him li'l Matty?
x, Mindy
Considering my son goes by anything from "psycho", "cuddlebug", "goofball", to "monkeyface"; you probably won't even call him by name, unless he's in trouble... :) But, if you're asking for input, here's my thoughts:
Jay- cute for a baby, not so cute for a grown man. No offense to all you grown-ups that happened to be named Jay.
MJ is cool, he's not going to run into alot of kids with the same nickname.
Alan and AJ, pretty ambivalent on those two, they don't really conjure up any pros or cons in my book.
Mathieson - kinda like that one
Mathew- Pretty big fan! I'd go with that one, and just call him the other nine million pet names you'll give him over the years... XO, Nancy
Sooo excited about the boy thing and love your name ideas . . . but I have to admit Mack immediately came to mind when I saw the entire name listed out. It may be too simple or have odd attachments like: Is your middle name "& cheese" -- but a classic boy cute/yet macho as he grows into it kinda name. Just a thought!
Aunt Beth:)
I went with Mathew. Since that will be his legal name - and the face that nobody calls "Daddy" Matt, Mathew...then I vote for Mathew. And Mathew Alan rolls off the tongue if he gets in trouble :)
Is BonQueeQuee Keyes off the table?
Uncle Jeff
I am a little partial to Jay for obvious reasons, but I like AJ also. Kel I listen to the MJ Morning show also, St. Louis is one of their markets! Ha!

It's Mindy again - Chris just read your blog & he also suggested MAK! You can be "Li'l Mak & Big Mak" - hahaha, how cute is that?
xo
Okay here goes my input. AJ is Lionel's sons nickname...I like it, it flows. MJ reminds me of Michael Jackson. Mathew is good, but I think it will be shortened to Mat. I really like Mak or Matty. Love you guys and good luck making your decision. Stephanie O.
Two write ins sort of. Like Jamie points out there is MAK, that's kind of cool and easy to explain. Second J, instead of Jay. My brother is a jr., Joseph Ray, but he's always just been J.
I like Mak, his initials!! I told Keli I'd call him Mak anyway...boys are like little Mac Trucks! KW
I voted Mathew. We have a Jackson that we ONLY call Jack. Everyone else only calls him Jack just like us- only people who don't know him or aren't around him call him Jackson. So, I wouldn't worry too much about people calling him Mat unless he starts it himself when he's older.
One note on MJ- the only thing I think of Michael Jackson...
This is so exciting - I voted for Mathew because I love the meaning! My cousins are Rick (dad) and Ricky (son) and we have always called them by that forever.
Love you all,
Meg
We voted for Matthew! Beautiful name and wonderful meaning. Nobody's ever called our newphew (Matthew) Matt yet. He's only 5. Matthew just fits with a little boy. I don't think anyone (or Baby Keyes) will try to shorten it for quite a while--middle school maybe? Anyway, if you don't want it being shortened to Matt, maybe just come up with a nickname later on as the years go by. Something that fits him when it's time. That's our two cents!! Love you -- Ryan & Sam
Sometimes I think you have to get to know him before he earns his nickname. Eric was enrique (don't know why) and Jon was Jonbo, again don't know why. BUT of the choices, I voted AJ as Jon had a great friend named AJ and it always felt very natural calling him AJ. We were in Yellowstone when I got your mom's call that it was a boy. I am so excited for you. Boys are so, so fun and they love their moms more than their dads (just kidding, mat). Your furniture is beautiful and I am so happy for you all! Last but not least, Jeff will be the best uncle ever!! djm
